Clinton was laid out in 1836. The town/city was titled for New York Governor De - Witt Clinton, a key promoter of the Erie Canal. A postal service called Clinton has been in operation since 1850. Nine citizens were pulled from the rubble, while the rest left on their own power. In the "Olde Glory Days" parade, which occurred less than one week after the accident, Komer was memorialized, and Elk's Lodge members from many parts of Western Missouri marched to show their support for the Clinton Lodge.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 9.26 square miles (23.98 km2), of which, 9.14 square miles (23.67 km2) is territory and 0.12 square miles (0.31 km2) is water. Several meaningful state highways intersect at Clinton, and a cluster of "big-box" stores, as well as a several "national-chain" motels, are positioned in that area.

As of the census of 2010, there were 9,008 citizens , 3,935 homeholds, and 2,371 families residing in the city.

There were 4,454 housing units at an average density of 487.3 per square mile (188.1/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 95.1% White, 1.9% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.5% from other competitions, and 1.8% from two or more competitions.

There were 3,935 homeholds of which 27.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 42.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.8% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 39.7% were non-families.

The median age in the town/city was 40.6 years.

22.6% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 8.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.4% were from 25 to 44; 25.1% were from 45 to 64; and 20.5% were 65 years of age or older.

Clinton lies at the end of the Katy Trail, a 225-mile long state park used by cyclists, runners, and horseback riders.

The former Katy barns from Clinton south to Nevada (MO) is still in operation by the Missouri and Northern Arkansas Railroad (Rail - America).
