It is the governmental center of county of Cape Girardeau County. It is a principal town/city of the Cape Girardeau Jackson, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In 1813, Cape Girardeau County succeeded Cape Girardeau District, and the Court of Common Pleas and the Court of General Quarter-Sessions of the Peace in Cape Girardeau were superseded by the Court of Common Pleas, dominant to a new seat of justice.

The seat of the county and the courts were at first held on the plantation of Thomas Bull about one and one-half mile south of present-day Jackson.

The first postal service was established in 1814 when the region was called Birdstown. The name was changed to Jackson on August 31, 1819, titled for Andrew Jackson, a general prominent for his part in the War of 1812. It was the first town to be titled after Andrew Jackson.

The Missouri Herald, the third journal in state, was established here on June 25, 1819. In 1818, the town already had a populace of 300.

There were 4,962 housing units at an average density of 490.2 per square mile (189.3/km ).

There were 4,708 homeholds out of which 36.9% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 28.1% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older.

About 5.0% of families and 6.7% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
