City of Kearney Kearney / k rni/ is a town/city in Clay County, Missouri, United States.

In 1867, John Lawrence began laying out plans for another small settlement around the newly established Kansas City and Cameron Railroad subsidiary of the Hannibal and Saint Joseph Railroad which was to build the Hannibal Bridge establishing Kansas City, Missouri as the dominant town/city in the region.

Kearney (although there is speculation that it was titled after Kearney, Nebraska).

As they grew, the two settlements of Centerville and Kearney were effectively consolidated , and the town of Kearney, Missouri was officially incorporated in 1869. Kearney is positioned at 39 21 57 N 94 21 37 W (39.365845, -94.360239). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 12.92 square miles (33.46 km2), of which, 12.91 square miles (33.44 km2) is territory and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 8,381 citizens , 2,978 homeholds, and 2,270 families residing in the city.

There were 3,120 housing units at an average density of 241.7 per square mile (93.3/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 96.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.8% from other competitions, and 1.8% from two or more competitions.

There were 2,978 homeholds of which 47.0% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 11.6% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.3% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 23.8% were non-families.

19.2% of all homeholds were made up of individuals and 8.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

The average homehold size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.23.

The median age in the town/city was 33.2 years.

32% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 6.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 30.6% were from 25 to 44; 21.4% were from 45 to 64; and 9.1% were 65 years of age or older.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,472 citizens , 1,910 homeholds, and 1,495 families residing in the city.

On September 5, 1847, Jesse James was born on the James farm, where his family resided to the northeast of the site where Kearney would eventually be established.
