Knob Noster was platted in 1856. The community's name is said by the State Historical Society of Missouri to be a combination of a knob, or hill, near the town site, and the surname Noster, honoring an unidentified early citizen. A postal service has been in operation since Knob Noster since 1846. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.91 square miles (7.54 km2), of which, 2.88 square miles (7.46 km2) is territory and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,709 citizens , 1,147 homeholds, and 675 families residing in the city.

There were 1,347 housing units at an average density of 467.7 per square mile (180.6/km2).
