Macon was platted in 1856. Like the county, Macon was titled for Nathaniel Macon. A postal service called Macon City was established in 1856, and the name was changed to Macon in 1892. The Blees Military Academy, Macon County Courthouse and Annex, and Wardell House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Macon is positioned at 39 44 26 N 92 28 14 W (39.740596, -92.470639). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 6.30 square miles (16.32 km2), of which 6.00 square miles (15.54 km2) is territory and 0.30 square miles (0.78 km2) is water. As of the census of 2010, there were 5,471 citizens , 2,369 homeholds, and 1,357 families residing in the city.
