Mount Vernon was platted in 1845. The town/city was titled after Mount Vernon, the estate of George Washington. A postal service called Mount Vernon has been in operation since 1846. Mount Vernon is positioned at 37 06 00 N 93 49 05 W. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 3.87 square miles (10.02 km2), all of it land. There were 2,013 housing units at an average density of 520.2 per square mile (200.9/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 95.3% White, 0.4% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.6% from other competitions, and 1.9% from two or more competitions.

There were 1,810 homeholds of which 31.3% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.0% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 39.2% were non-families.
