Seymour was laid out in 1882. The community's name is a transfer from Seymour, Indiana. A postal service called Seymour has been in operation since 1881. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.76 square miles (7.15 km2), all of it land. Seymour is positioned on the southeastern edge of the Springfield Plateau in the Ozark Mountains.
