Washington is positioned at 38 33 7 N 91 0 48 W (38.551879, -91.013313). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 9.87 square miles (25.56 km2), of which, 9.34 square miles (24.19 km2) is territory and 0.53 square miles (1.37 km2) is water. The town/city has an extreme continental climate.

In 1814 a ferry boat was licensed for crossing the Missouri River to the north and the settlement became known as Washington Landing.

The town of Washington has 445 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, a state record. Due to its historic charm, Washington has a burgeoning tradition tourism industry, with visitors also thriving to the close-by Missouri Rhineland.

As of the census of 2010, there were 13,982 citizens , 5,863 homeholds, and 3,665 families residing in the city.
